COLOURING.ANGELS have arrived and blondes across Northern Virginia are giddy!

Meet our newest blondetourage: COLOURING.ANGELS. Our four new color-enhancing treatments add a lip-gloss like shine and tone to the hair to enhance existing tones, neutralize unwanted tones, and improve color longevity without building up on the hair. Packed with hair-loving ingredients such as Olive Leaf Extract, Green Tea Extract, and Grape Seed Oil, our newest ANGELS moisturize your hair while improving flexibility and adding protection for your locks.

Our newest BLONDE squad includes four color enhancing shades – AUTUMN, COOL, CRYSTAL, and SUGARED – to add subtle hints of color and incredible, illuminating shine and are $39 for an 8.4 oz bottle.

Our AUTUMN.ANGEL adds a soft, apricot rosé hue for natural, rose gold, or apricot-toned blondes, while our COOL.ANGEL magnifies cool, ash shades while removing stubborn orange hues from the hair. Use our SUGARED.ANGEL for a creamy, vanilla beige to mute unwanted warmth and create luminous toffee tones, or stick to our CRYSTAL.ANGEL to enhance your existing colour while illuminating your strands with this unique clear, top coat.

Following our cult-favorite BLONDE.ANGEL treatment, our four newest ANGELS fit right into our BLONDE regimen for your at-home color care to moisturize, enhance, restore shine, and refresh colored or uncolored hair. To use, simply cleanse the hair with the WASH of your choice and apply your desired COLOURING.ANGEL, leaving for 3-5 minutes before rinsing. You can use your ANGEL as often as you wish, as the pigments are designed to never build up on your hair!

Through June 30, 2018, we are offering an at-the-bowl, COLOURING.ANGEL treatment for just $5!

Ellie’s Hats: Our February Community Outreach Partner

Ellie's HatsEllie’s Hats is a Northern Virginia Non-Profit who seeks to bring joy and help to local families whose children are battling cancer. Ellie’s Hats was inspired by a sweet NoVa girl, Ellie Whitfield, who was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in the Spring of 2013. After losing her hair from chemotherapy, Ellie began to wear different fun hats to school to help express her personality. Her P.E. teacher, Jay Coakley, noticed her affinity for “fun and cheery hats” and organized a hat drive to provide Ellie with a broader selection of hats to wear – and thus was born Ellie’s Hats! Thousands of children across the country now receive new hats through Ellie’s Hats.

In addition to providing joy to kids battling cancer by providing unique, fun hats, Ellie’s Hats collects gift cards and other items to give to local families whose children are battling cancer. Also, in 2014, Ellie’s Hats worked closely with Team Mathias to introduce a Cure Childhood Cancer License Plate in honor of Mathias Giordano to help spread awareness about childhood cancers. Mathias, diagnosed in 2012 with Osteosarcoma, inspired thousands through his determined cheer, his powerful courage and his extreme kindness. Mathias passed after a 28 month battle in December 2014.

We are so honored to partner with Ellie’s Hats by selecting them again as our February Community Outreach Partner. We will be donating $1 from every haircut this February to this amazing, local non-profit. Also, you too can help Ellie’s Hats directly by going to their upcoming fundraiser on March 10th at Blackfinn Ameripub in Ashburn.

Ensuring meals for our neighbors in need

We are so blessed and honored to be able to support our community. It’s one of the things we love most about being entrepreneurs! This November, we have once again selected Dulles South Food Pantry (DSFP) for our community outreach partner for our Dulles Landing Location and we have selected Western Fairfax Christian Ministries (WFCM) Food Pantry for our community outreach partner for our Fairfax location. Both non-profits serve by ensuring our neighbors have food on their tables. We will be donating $1 from every haircut in the month of November from our Fairfax location to WFCM and $1 from every haircut from our Dulles Landing location to DSFP.

We just love what these two organizations are doing for our communities by providing the most basic of needs to our friends and neighbors. In addition to donating a portion of our November proceeds, we will also be collecting food items for both WFCM (Fairfax location) and DSFP (Dulles Landing location). Please see a list of needs below and please bring in non expired items only. Salon Khouri is First Northern Virginia Hair Salon to Offer Innovative Air Wave Perm

Airwave Machine

We are excited to be the first salon in the Washington DC/Northern Virginia area to offer the Air Wave perm using the state-of-the-art Air Wave machine from Takara Belmont! Created in Japan, the Air Wave perm uses new and innovative technology that will create a soft, beautiful curl in your hair without damaging your locks! Unlike traditional perms where your hair is curly when wet, curls from an air wave perm reappear once your hair dries. Like any perm, however, you do need to be sure you are using quality styling products and have a good understanding of how to maintain and style your hair. Our highly trained stylists are happy to assist with both product recommendations and styling tips/tricks!

The Air Wave machine, invented by Takara Belmont, employs a new shape-memory system. The entire process is four steps. The first step in the process is a commTakaraBelmontAirWaveon step shared with traditional cold perms and newer, hot digital perms: softening the hair to receive the curl. The second and third steps are unique to the Air Wave perm. In the second step, called “Creeping,” the Air Wave machine allows the natural water particles in the hair to create movement. It then swells the cortex cells to create waves by optimizing and controlling temperature and moisture levels of the hair. In the third step, called “Glass Transition,” the hair is gently dried, where the circulating warm air allows the hair to “memorize” the new waves of the cortex cells and cell membrane complex. Throughout this step, the temperature of the air is only 53–60℃ (127-140℉), which is what makes the Air Wave technique safer for your hair than digital hot perms. The futuristic machine, once connected to the rods in the hair, does make one think they are being prepped for a scene in a sci-fi flick, but this step is pivotal and sets the Air Wave apart from any other perm! In the final step, an oxidizing agent is applied to secure the natural waves.

While traditionally permed hair can damage already stressed hair creating a frizzy appearance, the Air Wave process substantially minimizes damage by using low heat and high quality products. Some even feel their hair is softer to the touch post-treatment!

We are excited to be the first salon in the DC area to offer this state-of-the art service. Salon Khouri stylist, Orie Hanrahan, originally from Japan, is an expert at the Air Wave perm service and we are proud to be the first to offer this exclusive service using the Air Wave machine to the Northern Virginia Area.

The futuristic machine, once connected to the rods in the hair, does make one think they are being prepped for a scene in a sci-fi flick, but this step is pivotal and sets the Air Wave apart from any other perm!

Here’s what to expect at your Air Wave appointment:

  • We ask that all clients schedule a complimentary consultation prior to booking an Air Wave service. The stylist needs to examine your hair type, ask you about your hair history, and go over pricing with you.
  • The scheduled Air Wave appointment will last approximately 2 hours for shoulder length hair, and could take up to 3-4 hours for longer/thicker hair.
  • The Air Wave starts at $200 for shoulder length, normal volume hair for a two hour service. You can expect to pay $300 to $400 for very long or thick hair. A formal quote will be provided at your complimentary consultation.
  • Your stylist will provide styling tips to you during your appointment. The stylist will also recommend high quality products to purchase at the time of your appointment to help style, protect, and maintain your investment. Using the products recommended by your stylist is essential.

How to Avoid Halloween Beauty Blunders

We recently were asked by the Today Show how to avoid Halloween hair hijinks!

You can read the full article here, and below is an excerpt:

“If you get glitter stuck to your scalp, try using a clarifying shampoo such as Kevin Murphy Maxi Wash. This often does the trick for my clients. Gently massage the scalp with the shampoo to break up any glitter that has affixed to your scalp,” said Jonathan Elkhouri, master stylist and owner of Salon Khouri in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. If you are attempting any hair looks that defy gravity using wire (like Pippi Longstocking or Dr. Seuss’ Whoville characters), be sure to use a coated wire such as a pipe cleaner or wired-ribbon. If your hair gets stuck in one of the wires, apply a generous amount of conditioner onto the knot and gently work out the tangle, Elkhouri suggests. The conditioner will make the hair slippery enough to detangle the wire from the hair.

Promise us this …

The Childhood Cancer Awareness movement is growing. Our hope is that the color gold instantly makes people think, “childhood cancer awareness” just as pink conjures up “breast cancer awareness” for many. Yes, the movement is growing, but there is still a lot of work to be done.

There have been only three drugs in the past twenty years approved by the FDA that were specifically developed to treat children with cancer. And that number grew from two to three just this year. This is simply not acceptable.

The National Cancer Institute spends just 4% of it’s federal research dollars on childhood cancer research funding. Just 4%. This is simply not acceptable.

The incidents of childhood cancer have increased 29% in the past twenty years. As our friend Tom Mitchell at Stillbrave said, “we spend more as a nation on potato chips than we do finding a cure for various childhood cancers.” This is simply not acceptable.

There are more facts on childhood cancer, but you are probably getting a little overwhelmed thinking, “what can I do?” Well, the truth is, there’s a LOT you can do!

First, you can sign the Petition on The Truth 365 website asking Congress to make children a national priority by increasing federal funding for childhood cancer research.

You can volunteer with local organizations such as Stillbrave, Ellie’s Hats, Kyle’s Kamp, Journey4ACure, participate in CureFest on September 20th, or email us to get connected to other many wonderful groups.

You can come into Salon Khouri during the month of September and get a haircut or a yellow-gold hair extension. We are donating $1 from every haircut in both our Dulles Landing and Fairfax locations to The Truth 365. We are donating net proceeds from the $10 yellow-gold hair extensions as well! Or, come see us at CureFest to learn more about how to implement a Crazy Hair Day at your school to raise money and awareness for childhood cancers.

Will you promise that you will do just one thing on this list? Then, tell someone about it. Ask them to do one thing too. Let’s keep the movement going! Help us spread awareness!
