Keep your life colorful between appointments

Staying true to our mission

Dear SK Enthusiasts

We would like to share our company’s position about salons selling professional color to clients for at-home application, primarily for grey coverage. We understand why many salons are offering this in this very uncertain time for everyone: it helps bring revenue to the salon and seemingly helps clients who are eager to cover their roots. We *totally* understand that! After much thought, prayer, and a lively and lengthy team discussion of the pros and cons that included all of our stylists, Salon Khouri decided we will not be selling home color kits to our beloved clients. Here’s why:

Using and applying professional color is a skill set that stylists develop over a period of time, with many hours of training and hands-on practice. There are many risks associated with applying professional color at home by those who are not licensed that could not only damage your hair, but leave your hair color uneven and blotchy, ultimately leaving you with a costly color correction appointment at the end of the day. Applying color without proper sectioning leads to uneven coverage of the color. When you overlap color while applying, bands will be left in the hair color, leaving a very unnatural result. And, if your timing during application is not precise, you will have dark spots and/or light spots in your hair color. And a most concerning possibility is the chance that you get color in your eyes when applying your color.

It has *always* been our mission to help you love your hair. Sending you home with professional color (or even recommending box color) is incongruous with our mission.

However, keeping true to our integrity and mission and putting your best interest first, and wanting to offer an avenue that will best serve you at home until we can serve you again in person, we recommend using our WOW Root Cover Up product that we can deliver locally at no charge or for $5 shipping. It’s true; they will be the first ever beauty brand to implement this practice, and they are hoping to start an industry-wide conversation about the heart of the issue: safe packaging disposal. As a salon, we are committed to doing what we can to keep our planet as beautiful as the day it was created. Through their new project, they have projected to save the planet over 360 tons of new plastic each year. We are excited to be a Northern Virginia salon committed to helping with reducing ocean waste plastics through this initiative.

Every minute of every day, one garbage truck full of plastic is dumped into our oceans, which has led to over 5 trillion pieces of plastic currently littering our beautiful water and affecting its sea life. Every piece of plastic that has ever been made – ever – is still here on our planet, and currently only 9% of our world’s plastics are recycled. Summer Chlorine Conundrum

We were recently asked by one of our long-time clients, “what do I do about the CHLORINE?” She recently signed up for a charity Sprint Triathlon, Tri 4 Love, and has been getting in a lot of pool time. She’s noticed a build-up of chlorine on her hair and some drying of her highlighted ends. Here’s the chlorine-busting regimen we recommend to keep your hair healthy.

  1. Go into the pool with wet hair. Those signs that ask you to rinse *before* you enter the pool have a lot of wisdom. Not only does it give your body a pre-rinse to rinse away any sweat that may be on your skin, but it can protect your hair from chlorine absorption. When your hair is dry, it’s porous. When it’s wet, it’s not. If the hair is wet, it will absorb less chlorinated water than dry hair.
  2. If you couldn’t pre-wet your hair, use a little conditioner on your ends before getting in the pool. Don’t go crazy, just a light covering of your tresses will do. This follows the same theory as a pre-rinse: if your hair is saturated with good clean water or a good conditioner, the less likely it is for chlorine to enter the shaft of your hair.
  3. Rinse your hair as soon as you can after swimming. We aren’t talking a full-out shampoo, although you should do that as soon as you can, but rinse the chlorinated water out of your immediately after getting out of the pool. Yes, even at breaks.
  4. Use Kevin Murphy STAYING.ALIVE, an amazing leave-in treatment that moisturizes and protects the hair. This stuff is miraculous!
  5. Pre-wash your hair once or twice a week with Kevin Murphy MAXI.WASH. This detoxifying shampoo contains anti pollutant ingredients that removes build-up, such as chlorine. Apply to wet hair, massage in, leave on for one minute then rinse and wash with your favorite Kevin Murphy wash.
