Balayage in Fairfax, VA - Done at Salon Khouri

Balayage vs Foil Highlights

Balayage vs foil highlights? Which one is right for you? The answer to that question largely depends on personal preference. And while we can’t make that decision for you, we are happy to help you understand the difference between the two.

Foil Highlights

Balayage vs Foil Highlights - This is foilFoil highlights is a lifting process during which a hairstylist uses foils to separate strands of your hair. Lightner is applied to the strands and then wrapped in foil to process. The foil keeps the lightener from bleeding onto the rest of your hair.

In a traditional foil highlight service, the stylist takes the lightener all the way to the root of your hair. Generally, you should touch up your foil highlights every 4-6 weeks.

Balayage

Balayage is a lightening process that uses a sweeping motion to apply lightener to strands of hair. Hairstylists use freehand motion application and, typically, foil is not used and , instead, the the lightener processes in open air. Balayage is not typically taken to the root and can give a more ‘lived-in’ look.

Balayage vs Foil Highlights - Color Balayage example

Since balayage application is done freehand, the technique gives a more natural, sunkissed look that requires less frequent balayage appointments — typically it’s touched up every 8 weeks, however, having a quick toner application done every four weeks will ensure your balayage looks Hollywood-caliber all the time.

Balayage vs Foil Highlights: Which One Should You Choose?

The choice is yours! Both offer beautiful results. If you are looking for heaving lifting or a platinum blonde, foil highlights or babylights are the way to go. If you prefer a more natural, sunkissed look, then we definitely recommend balayage.

Salon Khouri is First Northern Virginia Hair Salon to Offer Innovative Air Wave Perm

Airwave Machine

We are excited to be the first salon in the Washington DC/Northern Virginia area to offer the Air Wave perm using the state-of-the-art Air Wave machine from Takara Belmont! Created in Japan, the Air Wave perm uses new and innovative technology that will create a soft, beautiful curl in your hair without damaging your locks! Unlike traditional perms where your hair is curly when wet, curls from an air wave perm reappear once your hair dries. Like any perm, however, you do need to be sure you are using quality styling products and have a good understanding of how to maintain and style your hair. Our highly trained stylists are happy to assist with both product recommendations and styling tips/tricks!

The Air Wave machine, invented by Takara Belmont, employs a new shape-memory system. The entire process is four steps. The first step in the process is a commTakaraBelmontAirWaveon step shared with traditional cold perms and newer, hot digital perms: softening the hair to receive the curl. The second and third steps are unique to the Air Wave perm. In the second step, called “Creeping,” the Air Wave machine allows the natural water particles in the hair to create movement. It then swells the cortex cells to create waves by optimizing and controlling temperature and moisture levels of the hair. In the third step, called “Glass Transition,” the hair is gently dried, where the circulating warm air allows the hair to “memorize” the new waves of the cortex cells and cell membrane complex. Throughout this step, the temperature of the air is only 53–60℃ (127-140℉), which is what makes the Air Wave technique safer for your hair than digital hot perms. The futuristic machine, once connected to the rods in the hair, does make one think they are being prepped for a scene in a sci-fi flick, but this step is pivotal and sets the Air Wave apart from any other perm! In the final step, an oxidizing agent is applied to secure the natural waves.

While traditionally permed hair can damage already stressed hair creating a frizzy appearance, the Air Wave process substantially minimizes damage by using low heat and high quality products. Some even feel their hair is softer to the touch post-treatment!

We are excited to be the first salon in the DC area to offer this state-of-the art service. Salon Khouri stylist, Orie Hanrahan, originally from Japan, is an expert at the Air Wave perm service and we are proud to be the first to offer this exclusive service using the Air Wave machine to the Northern Virginia Area.

The futuristic machine, once connected to the rods in the hair, does make one think they are being prepped for a scene in a sci-fi flick, but this step is pivotal and sets the Air Wave apart from any other perm!

Here’s what to expect at your Air Wave appointment:

  • We ask that all clients schedule a complimentary consultation prior to booking an Air Wave service. The stylist needs to examine your hair type, ask you about your hair history, and go over pricing with you.
  • The scheduled Air Wave appointment will last approximately 2 hours for shoulder length hair, and could take up to 3-4 hours for longer/thicker hair.
  • The Air Wave starts at $200 for shoulder length, normal volume hair for a two hour service. You can expect to pay $300 to $400 for very long or thick hair. A formal quote will be provided at your complimentary consultation.
  • Your stylist will provide styling tips to you during your appointment. The stylist will also recommend high quality products to purchase at the time of your appointment to help style, protect, and maintain your investment. Using the products recommended by your stylist is essential.

Ombre, Balayage, Foil, oh my! Our guide to the different techniques …

We get a lot of people who call the salon and sheepishly say, “I would like a … foil … or ombre/balayage. I’m not sure really what the difference is!?” We agree, it can get confusing, so we’ve put together this (hopefully) helpful guide to walk you through the differences between these various lightening techniques. We are also going to add in traditional color here, as well as another term, sombre, to hopefully provide a thorough guide for everything. All images below are of our work at Salon Khouri.

Color
When a client comes in for color, we apply one shade of color to the entire hair. The color is one dimensional as no highlights or low lights are added to the hair. The photo on the left is an example of all over color.

Balayage
The word balayage is a French word that means ‘sweeping’, which derived from balayer ‘to sweep.’ When performing this technique, stylists will paint freehand, in a sweeping motion, the highlights onto the hair using a board. Balayage has various styles — everything from a dark, rooty balayage, to ombre or sombre, all the way to babylights. The word ombre is a French word that translates into shadow or shade — so, ombre is the style and balayage is the technique used to create the style. We’ve put together a few photos of our work below with captions on the style of balayage.

Foil Highlights
Ahh, yes, the familiar technique that we all know well! Highlights have been a staple in American hair culture for decades, and will likely remain on the top list for decades to come. Highlighting uses foils that are taken right to the root, to produce lighter strands of hair from roots to ends.

Toners

Toners are used to create a custom color after a highlighting service. When you lift hair with lightener, you are exposing the underlying pigments in the hair. Some pigments are more red, others more orange, while others are more gold or yellow or a combination of pigmentation. A toner allows the stylist to take the unwanted tones and turn them into gorgeous results such as ash, beige, champagne, pastel, or icy-white.

We hope this guide has helped. We are happy to answer more questions you have – simply call us at 703.273.7878 to schedule a complimentary consultation with one of our highly trained stylists!
