Trending Hairstyles: Natural Movement

Whether working with natural texture patterns or recreating them with styling techniques, in addition to embracing individual texture, we’re seeing a polished styling trend that is leaning toward natural movement in all shapes and forms. From less deliberate curls to randomized wave patterns and a variety of patterns, this takes undone movement to the next level.

Where You Can Spot The Movement:

Drawing on the natural progression of the styles seen around the world, you can easily see natural movement in all its glory in our 2021 LOOK.BOOK. Highlighting the latest product picks, color trends and styles featured in our most-loved campaigns. One of our latest features, VELVET.FLORA was inspired by the opulence of 19th-century romance and glamour, shapes are refined yet wild, polished yet natural, and inexplicably individualized. Adding to this, the influence of fashion and nature built into the brand ethos are also echoed in the trend.

How To Create the Look:

It isn’t just about utilizing a single technique, it is about mixing them to create a more unplanned feel. “Movement that appears natural can be very hard to achieve, and even harder to maintain. It’s not as simple as just leaving your hair to air dry. Great looking natural hair always comes down to your product choice.” — Kevin Murphy

Each look has a beginning, middle, and end. To begin, you start by improving the health of the hair so that whether you’re working with natural air-dried texture, heat-styled, or a combination of the two, you’re able to begin with the best possible canvas. Regular use of a WASH and RINSE system like HYDRATE-ME.WASH + RINSE, which adds moisture and nourishment to the hair is ideal.

The middle is then all about product combinations and layering at the right times throughout styling to get the desired effect. For example, if you want to create curly texture but with more drawn-out shapes you’ll need a product that refines the shape but with a degree of style ability to reshape the structure. Depending on your hair pattern type either reach for MOTION.LOTION to deliver flexible, frizz-free hold or KILLER.CURLS to define curls and help strengthen and smooth strands.

The end is where the finishing touches come into play. No matter the look, applying texturizing, shine, or holding agents to the hair takes the style to the next level — from separating curls to highlighting shapes or creating style memory. A few of our favorites to finish include DOO.OVER for fresh texture, SHIMMER.SHINE for shine and the iconic SESSION.SPRAY for long-lasting style memory with a flexible finish that never flakes.

Making It Your Own:

People always want what they can’t have and in this instance, your natural texture can be exactly what sets you apart from others. This movement is all about creating a style that draws on your individual texture and makes it your own. There are no set rules about the type of curls to create, how to part your hair, or what products to use. It is more about picking a style that suits you, is fairly easy to create, and makes you feel like your most authentic self.

Keep your life colorful between appointments

Don’t fade away! There’s plenty you can do to keep your color fresh and vibrant until you’re back in the salon again!

Some like it hot…

But your colored hair won’t. Always use lukewarm water when rinsing it through – anything hotter may leave your hair dry and dull. And always go for sulfate-free shampoos which are less drying.

Hairdryer heat is another enemy of colored hair. When possible, let it dry naturally.

We’ve some brilliant at-home products to help protect your hair when washing. We love everything KEVIN.MURPHY!

And to make it look great even without the help of a hairdryer try our KEVIN.MURPHY HAIR.RESORT.

We also have a heat protectant HEATED.DEFENSE for those days when you just have to use a hairdryer.

Keep in trim…

A simple trim and tidy-up between color appointments will keep your hair in tip-top condition (and you looking amazing) and will give the best possible results when you next have it colored.

Book for a quick trim now if you’re between color appointments. Just call us, 703.273.7878 or text us at 703.776.9858.

Blonde ambition…

Ditch the dull and brassy and keep the fabulous with some of our home-use color revival products designed specifically for between salon visits. Ask us about our KEVIN.MURPHY BLONDE Regimen.

Don’t use them straight away between salon visits, only when the brassiness starts to appear and limit to once a week or as needed.

We also have revival products for brunettes and redheads including KEVIN.MURPHY AUTUMN.ANGEL.

Get back to your roots…

Don’t despair when your roots start coming through. You can try root touch-up pens that won’t damage your hair and wash out with one shampoo.

We’re really happy to give advice about rescuing your roots between color appointments. You could also try our WOW Color Root Cover Up.

Throw on a hat…

Love the sun? We do too – but your colored hair won’t.

Sunlight can cause the color to fade. Protect your hair (and your skin) from those damaging UVA rays with a wide-brimmed sunhat when you’re out and about.

Our October Community Outreach Partner: Tigerlily Foundation

Every person on the Salon Khouri team has known someone who has battled breast cancer. It’s an awful disease that affects millions of women worldwide. The rates of breast cancer affecting younger women, aged 15-45) is on the rise. Thankfully, Tigerlily Foundation, a 501(c)(3) international nonprofit organization headquartered in Reston, Virgina, meets their specific needs. Tigerlily Foundation provides education, advocacy and support to young women before, during and after breast cancer. Its outreach focuses on the breast cancer community as a whole and includes family, friends, health advocates, physicians, researchers and more.

Any woman who has been diagnosed with breast cancer clearly understands the wide range of emotions, physical symptoms, financial impact, conflicting opinions, and the entire roller coaster ride of breast cancer. Tigerlily provides much needed emotional support during this time.

We invite you to watch their online series, BreatheTV. The latest episode [at the time of this post] focuses on the various and ongoing fears that a cancer diagnosis can bring and addresses the emotions that a patient may experience while living with this fear and the ways they can overcome it, the challenges of survivorship, and how they can use their support network to help them through this process.

We are honored to once again partner with Tigerlily Foundation this October and are donating $1 from every haircut we perform this month to this amazing non-profit.

Ellie’s Hats – Our September Community Outreach Partner

Just last September we reported on Ellie’s Hats’ amazing milestone of a total donation package of $100,000 through a partnership with Pediatric Specialists of Virginia (PSV) to donate $1,000 a month to five local families in need of financial support. Well, they didn’t stop there! As of June 16, 2021, the group reported delivering 160 $1,000 checks to local families working through PSV Clinic and Scharr Cancer Institute Social Workers. Ellie's Hats

Also by mid-June 2021, the group reported having sent more than 1,900 packages to children across the country. Ellie’s Hats packages are large canvas totes containing a hat for the cancer patient and his or her siblings, a T-shirt and other items to help and support patients and their families. Ellie’s Hats also provides Hero Bags to Inova Children’s Hospital for new admitted pediatric cancer patients. The Hero Bag contains items helpful for a family who has a child admitted to the hospital.

Friday September 17, 2021 the annual Ellie’s Hats Open will take place at South Riding Golf Course from 7:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. and the event includes breakfast and lunch. Registration is now closed, but be sure to keep up with Ellie’s Hats other great events posted on their website!

Ellie’s Hats was founded as a 501 (c)(3) in 2014 after Ellie started kindergarten at the Woodburn Elementary School in Falls Church, Virginia. Ellie was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in spring 2013. By the time she entered kindergarten she had lost most of her hair and was always wearing hats to school. Her teacher, Jay Coakley noticed her fun and cheerful looking hats and he organized a hat drive to provide her with a broader selection of hats to wear. Please check out their website for other ideas on how you can help in addition to donating and share this story to spread the word! We are honored to be donating $1 from every haircut this September to this amazing local non-profit!

Prevent, Disrupt, Restore – How Reset 180 is making a difference in human trafficking

Reset180 (formerly Nova Human Trafficking Initiative) works to prevent, disrupt and restore in the area of human trafficking in Northern Virginia.

PREVENT: Reset180 works to educate communities on what exactly modern day slavery looks like. Since 2010, their speakers bureau volunteers have provided prevention awareness education to hundreds of thousands of community members. The Reset180 speakers bureau empowers and equips the community to identify, report, and prevent human trafficking.

DISRUPT: Outreach and disruption teams focus on reaching out to both victims of trafficking and those who purchase them and hold them in captivity. Through prayer, policy change, in person and over the phone interactions, volunteers fight to disrupt the cycle of trafficking.

RESTORE: Since 2015, Restore180 has provided trauma-informed case management that provides access to vital services survivors need to stabilize and eventually live independently. This includes emergency financial assistance, safety planning, providing basic needs, access to legal services, working with the court system, therapy, enrollment in vocational programs, and a lot more.

Through each area of prevention, disruption and restoration, prayer remains a vital part of their process.

WV’s sex trafficking began at age 14 in Northern Virginia. She was recovered by law enforcement and referred to Reset180. Her trafficker was sentenced to 35 years in prison for the crimes he committed against her. Reset180 is walking with her through her healing journey:

This August, we are donating $1 from every haircut we perform to this amazing, life-changing, local non-profit. Help us end this modern slavery epidemic.

How fast does hair grow?

We get this question quite frequently, particularly from clients who are eager to grow out their locks.

How fast does hair grow

On average, hair grows about ½ inch per month, so about six inches per year, but the speed at which your hair grows can also depend on age, hair type, what you eat, and your overall health.

Hair grows in three stages: anagen, catagen and telogen:

  • Anagen is an active growth phase that lasts from 2 – 8 years
  • Catagen is a transition phase where hair stops growing; this phase lasts about 4-6 weeks
  • Telogen is a resting phase where hair falls out (natural shedding); this phase lasts 2-3 months

At any given time, 90-95% of the hair follicles on your scalp are in the anagen phase. Doing some quick math tells us that approximately 5-10% of your hair at any given time is therefore in the telogen phase, meaning 100-150 hairs fall out every day. And, the longer your hair is, the more you will notice it falling out. (So do not fret if you feel you are losing more hair the longer it gets — it just feels that way).

To help your hair grow stronger, be sure you are eating plenty of foods rich in vitamins and nutrients such as omega-3 and 6, zinc, B-5 and biotin, vitamin c, iron, and vitamin d.

Also, be sure to use quality hair products. We are adamant about this. We would never sell a product that we do not fully believe in and we absolutely believe that your hair will be more healthy if you follow the regimen we prescribe to you for at home hair care. We love the KEVIN.MURPHY line as it really is skincare for your hair. The KEVIN.MUPRHY product line is rich in vitamins and nutrients: it’s an investment to ensure not only the health of your hair but the longevity of the service you had at our salon. Did you know that many store-brand hair shampoos contain the same quality cleaners that they use in floor cleaners? You DON’T want to use that in your hair – they are drying, contain harsh chemicals and will strip the color and moisture from your beautiful locks. And, with high quality products, you do not need to use as much. We always recommend a nickel size amount of shampoo and conditioner with our KEVIN.MURPHY line.

We are also following a recent study that is looking at the benefits of taking keratin supplements. The study found that the group who took the supplement showed a 12.5% reduction in hair loos; a 5.9% improvement in hair strength and improved brightness and luster of the hair. Not a tremendous change, however, every little bit helps and it’s pretty easy to throw a little keratin supplement into your smoothie 😉

We hope this helps answer your question of “how fast will my hair grow?” As a top salon in Loudoun county, your Salon Khouri team is here to help you love your hair.

Windy Hill Foundation – Changing Local Lives

We are honored to once again partner with local non-profit, Windy Hill Foundation, located in Middleburg, Virginia. The foundation’s mission is to provide affordable, decent and safe housing for low and lower-income individuals, families, elders and adults with disabilities in both Loudoun and Fauquier Counties. The foundation provided 310 housing units in Loudoun and Fauquier in 2019 and supported no-cost onsite resident programs and services for those living in Windy Hill Foundation communities.

On-site programs consist of after-school academic and social programs, an eight-week drop-in summer day camp, tutoring programs during the school year, family, personal enrichment, social and health programs for younger and older adult residents through committing $200,000 annually, alongside many generous organizational and individual donors and grantors from surrounding communities and the greater Washington DC area. The overarching goal of these programs is to help residents move from affordable to market rate housing.

Conceived in the mind and spirit of Irene (Rene) Llewellyn, a Middleburg resident born in England, the foundation began when Rene was waiting to pick up a child for a music lesson and witnessed the poverty on Windy Hill. She was so impacted that she was determined to help improve local living conditions along with a friend, Edna Washington. Rene’s plans blossomed from a  group of community members who formed the Windy Hill Foundation Charter Board, to include raising enough money to purchase the properties and then use Housing and Urban Development (HUD) funds to pay for renovations of the homes. Over a 10-year initial revitalization period the community of 15 families who shared six outhouses and two cold water spigots transformed into totally renovated homes with water and sewer lines. The foundation realized during this initial time frame that the problem of inadequate, sub-standard housing and poverty was far greater than the small Windy Hill community.

By year twenty-five, 47 rental units throughout Middleburg had been acquired and renovated. By the 25th anniversary Windy Hill Foundation had built 186 affordable housing units throughout Loudoun Fauquier Counties. Rene’s dream went beyond housing to improving the resident’s needs and her philosophy drives the vision of Windy Hill today.

During our July sponsorship period, Salon Khouri will donate $1 for every haircut we do and we encourage all of you to visit the Windy Hill Website to learn how you can help in other ways, including volunteering and direct donations.

Kate’s Cause – Happy 10th Heavenly Birthday, Kate

Happy heavenly birthday, sweet Kate. Today, you would be celebrating turning 10 … possibly sassing your momma, definitely loving the 2021 invasion of the cicadas, and absolutely giggling that your momma is practically wearing a bee keeper suit to keep away from them. I hate that you are not here with her and your dad. I hate cancer. But I think of you daily, and think of ways to make the world better in your memory.

One of those ways is by dedicating our June Community Outreach Partner at Salon Khouri to Kate’s Cause, giving $1 from every haircut we do in June to support this amazing non-profit your parents set up. Kate’s Cause is doing great things for other kiddos battling cancer. It’s their hope and mission to find better, less toxic treatments. One of the big things they are working on now is by committing $75,000 to help fund some great research being done by Dr. Yael Mossé, MD, of the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Dr. Mossé’s goal is to develop targeted drugs for MYCN, a currently “undruggable” driver of pediatric cancer, within the next four years. This amazing doctor brought together a team of complementary researchers, each with unique experience to attack MYCN with innovative new technologies. Together, they will prove that the drugs they’re developing are effective against most lethal pediatric cancers, and they will be ready to launch a clinical trial shortly after the grant is completed in Spring 2025!

Precious Kate Rhoades

We encourage you to visit Kate’s Cause to learn what you can do to help beat childhood cancer. We also ask that you perform Random Acts of Kateness to honor Kate during June (#RandomActsOfKateness).  Find a neighbor who needs assistance going to the store or who needs help with their yard work; pay for the car behind you when you go through the drive-thru; offer to pay for a fellow shoppers’ items next time you go to a store.

Summer warnings for teen drivers: The Art of Driving, our May Community Outreach Partner

First, some facts: 23% of teen drivers are more likely to drive with three or more teens in the car in the summer, compared to 6% of teen drivers who are more likely to do so during the school year.

  • 48% of all teen driving fatalities were single vehicle crashes.
  • Approximately 3,000 15-20 year-olds are killed each year in vehicle crashes.
  • Alcohol and drugs are not major causes for these fatalities – representing only 20%.
  • 54% of all teen passenger deaths occurred when another teen was driving.
  • The teen brain has not fully developed until the mid 20’s. They are susceptible to distractions, risk taking behaviors, and a limited capacity to multi-task.
  • Inexperience and distractions are the leading cause of teen driving fatalities, particularly for 16 and 17-year-olds.
  • The majority of teen auto fatalities occur on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Most of those deaths occurred between 9 p.m. and midnight.

So what can we, as parents, grandparents, and friends, do to keep our children, grandchildren and friends safe on the road? Education is one of the best ways to help and there is no better place to learn about teen driving safety than The Art of Driving, founded by Robin Thompson after she tragically lost her 16 year old daughter, Ashley Renee Thompson, in a single vehicular crash in 2003. Robin’s passion is now educating the public on how we can keep our teens safe on the road. The Art of Driving offers teen awareness and responsibility training, parent awareness and responsibility training, a teen task force, and programs brought into schools, youth groups and civic organizations.

Additionally, Robin gives back through The Ashley Renee Thompson Memorial Foundation scholarship each year, granted to a deserving graduating senior. The application process includes:

  • a 500 word essay
  • letters of recommendation
  • high school transcript
  • record of community/school service
  • a 55 second video you produce to empower and motivate your peers to “Survive the 5” leading causes of teen vehicle crashes.

The winner for the 2021 Scholarship is Summer Duba from Westfield High School in Herndon, VA. Learn more here.

We are honored to once again partner with The Art of Driving as our May Community Outreach Partner and are donating $1 from every haircut this month to this amazing, local non-profit.
