How We Are Reducing Ocean Waste Plastic

We are proud to announce that Kevin Murphy will be re-working packaging on their square-shaped bottles to be made from 100% recycled ocean waste plastic. It’s true; they will be the first ever beauty brand to implement this practice, and they are hoping to start an industry-wide conversation about the heart of the issue: safe packaging disposal. As a salon, we are committed to doing what we can to keep our planet as beautiful as the day it was created. Through their new project, they have projected to save the planet over 360 tons of new plastic each year. We are excited to be a Northern Virginia salon committed to helping with reducing ocean waste plastics through this initiative.

Every minute of every day, one garbage truck full of plastic is dumped into our oceans, which has led to over 5 trillion pieces of plastic currently littering our beautiful water and affecting its sea life. Every piece of plastic that has ever been made – ever – is still here on our planet, and currently only 9% of our world’s plastics are recycled. What’s Inside KILLER.CURLS?

Kevin Murphy recently shared some of the ins-and-outs of what makes the KILLER.CURLS product so great! We love sharing knowledge with you about our favorite products, and are excited to share these tidbits on KILLER.CURLS!

As you guys know, we love to talk about the natural ingredients in the Kevin Murphy line — ingredients such as honey, pomegranate and shea butter. You may scratch your head, though, when you run into words like Polyurethane-14, AMP-Acrylates Copolymer and Sodium Polystyrene Sulfonate found in KILLER.CURLS. These are, shall we say, rather geeky names for substances which are actually extremely gentle and super beneficial for your hair! In fact, Polyurethane-14 and AMP-Acrylates Copolymer are “anionic ingredients found in many hair sprays, gels, mousses, lotions, pomades and other styling aids” which provide very strong, yet flexible hold. Sodium Polystrene Sulfonate is a high molecular weight sodium salt — versatile and used in many hair and skin products. SPS creates a “clear, flexible film that shrinks upon drying, quickly dissipates electric charge, remains stable among temperatures exceeding 300°C, and helps to reduce surface tension.” All of those amazing qualities equates to enhancing curl in your hair while allowing the curl to remain flexible with a lasting hold.

Kevin Murphy Hair Color Ingredient Spotlight: Pomegranate

We are SO in love with the Kevin Murphy hair color line and so are our SK Enthusiasts! They love how soft their hair feels, they love the depth and dimension of the Kevin Murphy color, they love the smell (yes, Kevin Murphy color actually smells GOOD because it has good things in it!).

We wanted to share a little about some of the ingredients in the Kevin Murphy color line. One of them is pomegranate. Pomegranate is known for it’s anti-inflammatory effects as well as for being a strong antioxidant and therefore anti-aging. As such, it’s the perfect ingredient to include in the Kevin Murphy color line!

According to wikipedia, the name pomegranate derives from medieval Latin pōmum “apple” and grānātum “seeded”. Possibly stemming from the old French word for the fruit, pomme-grenade, the pomegranate was known in early English as “apple of Grenada”—a term which today survives only in heraldic blazons.

The pomegranate juice in Kevin Murphy hair color comes from Turkey, Iran and Israel, and the extraction and concentration process is done in Italy. Most often seen in hand creams and lotions, Pomegranate is used as an invigorating and awakening agent for the hair and skin. In Kevin Murphy color, the Pomegranate works together with Honey, Shea Butter, Rose Hip and Aloe Vera to protect the integrity of your hair and ensure long-lasting color results!

Ingredient Spotlight: Angelica Root Extract

ANGEL.RINSE_ We were reading a recent Kevin Murphy blog post about one Angelica Root Extract, which is used in the aptly named Angel Rinse. We #lovekm and wanted to share some of the fun facts about this ancient and beneficial ingredient with our SK Enthusiasts!

Angelica-botanical-2Angelica, also known as Garden Angelica, Archangel, Root of the Holy Ghost and The Angel’s Herb, contains a plethora of rich vitamins and minerals such as B12, Iron, and Thiamin, among others. It’s believed that Angelica is a native plant of Syria and several cooler European and Asian climates, but it is also occasionally found in cold, moist climates such as Scotland, Lapland and Iceland. Angelica Root has many medicinal qualities and has been a respected herb for thousands of years. Angelica Root received it’s name as it blooms around the feast day of St. Michael the Archangel, and as such, is often planted in monasteries.
