Ellie’s Hats: Inspired by a spunky red-head … what’s not to love about that?

Ellie’s Hats is a Northern Virginia Non-Profit who seeks to bring joy and help to local families whose children are battling cancer. Ellie’s Hats was inspired by a sweet NoVa girl, Ellie Whitfield, who was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in the Spring of 2013. After losing her hair from chemotherapy, Ellie began to wear different fun hats to school to help express her personality. Her P.E. teacher, Jay Coakley, noticed her affinity for “fun and cheery hats” and organized a hat drive to provide Ellie with a broader selection of hats to wear – and thus was born Ellie’s Hats! Thousands of children across the country now receive new hats through Ellie’s Hats.

In addition to providing joy to kids battling cancer by providing unique, fun hats, Ellie’s Hats collects gift cards and other items to give to local families whose children are battling cancer. Also, in 2014, Ellie’s Hats worked closely with Team Mathias to introduce a Cure Childhood Cancer License Plate in honor of Mathias Giordano to help spread awareness about childhood cancers. Mathias, diagnosed in 2012 with Osteosarcoma, inspired thousands through his determined cheer, his powerful courage and his extreme kindness. Mathias passed after a 28 month battle in December 2014.

We are once again Freezin’ for a Reason!

Updated 1/15/2015: On Monday evening, January 11, 2015, I learned that Kate Rhoades relapsed to ALL just four short months after celebrating her end of treatment for the incidious disease.

Just a few short hours later, on Tuesday morning, January 12th, 2015, I learned that Kate, at just four and a half years young, had passed.

I have known her mother, Lindsay, for nearly twenty years. Kate was born just three months after our youngest, Ellie Grace. For two years, Kate underwent treatments. We prayed for her. We prayed for Mike, Lindsay, and Cheryl, Kate’s grandmother who was with Kate non-stop throughout. We celebrated from afar the good days. We cried for the bad days. We rejoiced at being at Kate’s End of Treatment party in September. And now we mourn the loss of a precious, sweet child, to cancer.

Cancer, I despise you. You keep taking precious children from their parents. You are taking mothers and fathers from their children and husbands and wives from their soulmates. I will continue to spread awareness about childhood cancers. I will contiunue to pray for a cure. I will continue to pray for these families enduring barbaric treatments.

This year, our team is jumping for Kate Rhoades. We hope to honor you well, precious Kate. We hope to raise a ton of money so that little ones fighting can enjoy time with their families at Camp Sunshine. I promise to continue to raise money for treatments in your honor, as well. You will not be forgotten. Ever.

In 2015, a team made up of Salon Khouri team members and friends plunged into the frozen waters of Lake Anne in Reston by participating in the Virginia Polar Dip to raise money for Camp Sunshine in Casco, Maine. We are once again taking the plunge and participating in the 2016 Virginia Polar Dip. We are humbly asking for your support.

All money raised goes to support Camp Sunshine. Camp Sunshine provides respite, support, joy, and hope to children with life-threatening illnesses and their immediate families from around the world through the various stages of their journeys. The year-round program is free of charge to all families, and includes 24-hour onsite medical and psychosocial support. Camp Sunshine also provides bereavement sessions for families who have lost a child to supported illnesses.

Please help our team reach our goal by making a donation to our team or, better yet, become a member of our team and take the plunge with us!

  • Anyone who donates will be entered into a drawing to win a FREE haircut or facial.
  • Anyone who joins our team receives a FREE haircut!!!

Helping feed our local brothers and sisters!

It’s so easy to take things for granted when we have abundance, particularly when it comes to a basic necessity such as food. However, this isn’t the reality for all. In fact, there are many of your neighbors who are struggling to have food to put on their tables each night. We have such a heart for local organizations who are ensuring our brothers and sisters are nourished. This November, we are donating $1 from every haircut to two wonderful, local non-profits who are ensuring that our neighbors have food on the table. Our Fairfax location is partnering once again with Our Daily Bread Fairfax, and our Dulles Landing location is partnering with Dulles South Food Pantry.

We will also be collecting food at both location for donation to the respective non-profits. A complete list of most wanted items for Our Daily Bread Fairfax can be found here, while a list of most wanted items for Dulles South Food pantry can be found here.

Both organizations have amazing outreach to our community and help ensure that those in need are fed while at the same time, promoting self-sufficiency to those served. Please take a moment to learn about each organization from their websites by clicking their respective logos below. Our hope is you will be encouraged by the good they do to help them continue to do so!

How to Avoid Halloween Beauty Blunders

We recently were asked by the Today Show how to avoid Halloween hair hijinks!

You can read the full article here, and below is an excerpt:

“If you get glitter stuck to your scalp, try using a clarifying shampoo such as Kevin Murphy Maxi Wash. This often does the trick for my clients. Gently massage the scalp with the shampoo to break up any glitter that has affixed to your scalp,” said Jonathan Elkhouri, master stylist and owner of Salon Khouri in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. If you are attempting any hair looks that defy gravity using wire (like Pippi Longstocking or Dr. Seuss’ Whoville characters), be sure to use a coated wire such as a pipe cleaner or wired-ribbon. If your hair gets stuck in one of the wires, apply a generous amount of conditioner onto the knot and gently work out the tangle, Elkhouri suggests. The conditioner will make the hair slippery enough to detangle the wire from the hair.
