Planting seeds of hope for Loudoun’s autistic community

We are beside ourselves excited to be partnering with Legacy Farms this July by donating $1 from every haircut from Salon Khouri Fairfax and Salon Khouri Dulles to this new and budding non-profit.LegacyFarmsLogo Additionally, we are collecting bags of seeds of the following vegetables for Legacy Farms for their garden project they are building for the Paxton school: broccoli, brussel sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, mustard greens, radishes, pumpkins, squash, beans or spinach. To thank you for helping with this great project, we will take $1 off your service for each bag up to 5 bags!

Legacy Farms was formed in 2011 by a group of teachers, parents and professionals with a common vision: to create training for meaningful post-secondary opportunities for adults with autism and other developmental and social challenges. Legacy Farms envisions a community of people living and working together on the farm, in a way that will allow them to remain self sustainable and as independent as possible. It is the goal of Legacy Farms to not only teach their participants these skills, but to connect them with the rural community through a variety of outreach programs and services.

Legacy Farms hopes to raise $300k this year to allow them to lease a seven-acre parcel north of Purcellville, which will allow Legacy Farms to provide work for more adults with autism and other challenges. You can learn more about Legacy Farms via their website, or, we encourage you to attend their 2nd annual Legacy Farms Summer Garden Party on August 1 from 6-9 PM. Be sure to visit the Legacy Farms event page for more information.

We love what the ART of Driving is doing for teens and driving safety!

We are proud to be once again sponsoring The ART of Driving this June by donating $1 from every haircut to this organization dedicated to keeping teens safe on the road.

The stats are sobering. We will share just a few from The ART of Driving website:

  • 48% of all teen driving fatalities were single vehicle crashes.
  • Alcohol and drugs are NOT major causes for these fatalities – representing only 20%.
  • Inexperience and distractions are the leading cause of teen driving fatalities, particularly for 16 and 17-year-olds.
  • 54% of all teen passenger deaths occurred when another teen was driving.
  • The teen brain has not fully developed until the mid 20’s. They are susceptible to distractions, risk taking behaviors, and a limited capacity to multi-task.
  • 80% of crashes involve some form of driver inattention within three seconds before the crash.
  • The majority of teen auto fatalities occur on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Most of those deaths occurred between 9 p.m. and midnight.
  • 16 to 18-year-olds have the highest crash rate of any other age group.

The ART of Driving spreads its message of safe teen driving through a variety of presentations. Presentations can be arranged for schools, youth organizations, churches, civic groups, driver education programs, and even for groups of concerned parents wishing to sponsor presentations for themselves and their teen drivers.

The ART of Driving was founded by Robin Thompson in memory of her daughter Renee Ashley who lost her life in a single vehicular accident when Renee was just 16 years old. Robin has dedicated herself to helping teach parents and teens the many dangers associated with teen driving and how to help your teens stay safe on the road.

If you love to run and would like to help support The ART of Driving, be sure to sign up for their 2nd Annual ‘Survive the 5’ 5k run here.2015 5klogo

Fundraiser for the Fenske Family

October 5, 2014 was a day that started what has been a long journey for the Fenske family. After experiencing troubling stomach pain, Peter was admitted to the hospital for a case of pancreatitis. After three days, it was determined that Peter had gallbladder disease. On November 10th, Peter had his gallbladder removed. During the operation, the doctors found cysts on Peter’s liver and a growth in his gallbladder. After two weeks, his doctor called and said the word no one ever wants to hear: cancer. After some treatments in Virginia, the Fenske’s decided the best place to treat Peter would be at the Cancer Treatment Center in Philadelphia, PA.

Their journey has been filled with much joy and much sorrow – many highs and many lows. Communities have rallied around to support the family through many, many prayers, cooking meals, and helping with the Fenske’s two sweet, young children Allison and Aiden.

There are so many expenses involved in battling cancer. These expenses come at a time when the family needs to focus on healing and supporting each other, and not worrying about how additional expenses will be met.

We are holding a raffle to win a half day of beauty at Salon Khouri — all monies raised will be donated to Peter’s GoFundMe to help the family with expenses. The half day of beauty will include a hair color and cut, a conditioning treatment, a Signature Facial, a brow wax and a paraffin hand treatment.

Additionally, the gracious owners of Kid Junction in Chantilly, VA have donated 10 passes to Kid Junction, Chantilly.

Raffle tickets are $5 each. You can purchase raffle tickets using the buttons below. You will have the option to choose more than one raffle ticket on the next screen — the more you purchase, the better your odds are, and you are helping lighten the financial burden of the Fenkse’s, and for that, we are so grateful:

Protecting the poor from violence in the developing world …

We just love the simplicity of the mission statement of International Justice Mission: We are a global organization that protects the poor from violence in the developing world.

Typically, when we think of helping the poor, the first thing that comes to mind is food and shelter. These are clearly needed and it’s a blessing that people come forward to help with the most basic of needs. However, the poor are often neglected when it comes to justice. They are stepped on, forgotten, abused and left without defense. That’s where the International Justice Mission steps in. Their global team includes hundreds of lawyers, investigators, social workers, community activists and other professionals at work in nearly 20 communities.

Their work includes rescuing victims, bringing criminals to justice, giving victims the support and tools they need to heal and thrive, and strengthening justice systems by stopping violence before it starts.

Did you know that 32 million people are enslaved worldwide? And that 1 out of 5 women is a victim of rape or attempted rape? And that 5 million people are chased from their homes every day?

We encourage you to learn more about IJM by visiting their website or watching this short video on Suhana’s story.

This April, we will be donating $1 from every haircut to this very important organization doing amazing work around the world to help bring justice to the poor.

Remembering Barb Jelinek

On March 1st, a longtime client and dear friend to Salon Khouri passed away at just 62 years young after a courageous battle with cancer.

Barb had the most wonderful and magnetic personality — her sweet smile immediately drew you in. Barb was an amazing ‘Gammie’ to her grandchildren and, if you met her children and husband, you would instantly know what an incredible mother and wife she was as well. Barb was extremely athletic and could probably out-run and out-cycle most twenty year olds!

Barb had previously battled breast cancer and won that fight. When we were told she was diagnosed with cancer again, we were simply devastated. Her cancer this fight started in the kidneys and quickly spread throughout her body. Barb fought with every ounce of her might, which, if you knew Barb, was tremendous might. She will be missed greatly by us, her tremendous network of friends, her family, and husband of thirty eight loving years.

We invite you to leave a few words of kindness for her family and we will be sure to share it with Steven and their children.

In memory of Barb, we are donating $1 from every haircut this March to the Georgetown-Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center Kidney Cancer Research Fund.

But, the good news is, there are simple things you can do each day to prevent becomeing a part of these statistics! Visit https://www.GoRedForWomen.org and sign up for their heart tips. They will share little tricks that will make a world of difference, such as replacing your office chair with an exercise ball, or one of our personal favorites, calling an old friend to chat to reduce stress!

This seemed like a great idea … in July!

Updated 3-3-2015 … here are some photos of our 2015 Polar Dip … brrrr!!!! The salon raised and donated over $5,000 toward the event and the event overall raised over $114k for Camp Sunshine! We are looking forward to teaming up again for next year!!!!

Since 2007, Salon Khouri has been holding various fundraising events and donating to childhood cancer groups to raise money and awareness for childhood cancer. In July, we were asked by the lovely founder of the Reston Virginia Polar Dip, Gail Toth, to jump in the Virginia Polar Dip. It seemed like a GREAT idea … in July. Now that it’s January, and the dip is sneaking up on is in February, it seems like a CRAZY idea. However, we will do just about anything for these kiddos, so we are happy to take the plunge!!!!

All money goes to support Camp Sunshine. Camp Sunshine provides respite, support, joy, and hope to children with life-threatening illnesses and their immediate families from around the world through the various stages of their journeys. The year-round program is free of charge to all families, and includes 24-hour onsite medical and psychosocial support. Camp Sunshine also provides bereavement sessions for families who have lost a child to supported illnesses.

Please help our team reach our goal by making a donation to our team or, better yet, become a member of our team and take the plunge with us! Anyone who donates will be entered into a drawing to win a FREE haircut or facial. Anyone who joins our team receives a FREE haircut!!!
